MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A valiant fourth quarter rally came up short as the Edgewood College women's basketball team fell to MSOE 62-49 at the Kern Center. The Eagles trimmed a 13-point deficit down to three points before coming up short.
Edgewood College (2-5, 1-4 NACC) trailed MSOE 41-28 late in the third quarter, but the Eagles' Zoey Dougherty hit a jumper and Sierra Jiran beat the third quarter buzzer with a three-point shot, to cut into the Raiders lead. Jiran scored again in the fourth period, Rachel Pope followed with a layup and Allison Gordon scored inside to get the Eagles within four points at 43-39.
After MSOE (2-4, 2-1 NACC) pushed the lead back up to 49-41 on a jumper by Margaret Pugh, the Eagles made their final push. Gordon scored a basket inside and Pope drilled a three-pointer to make it a one possession game at 49-46 with 3:33 remaining. However, the Raiders scored the next 12 points in a row, rendering Jiran's late three-pointer moot.
Edgewood College started strong leading 13-8 after the first period behind four free throws from Dougherty. The Eagles held the lead much of the second period, but the Raiders' Marisa Gerstbrein scored with six seconds left in the half for a 23-21 MSOE lead.
Pope finished with 17 points, for her seventh straight game in double figures. Jiran scored 12 points, with a pair of three-point baskets and a team-high seven rebounds. Dougherty gave the Eagles three players in double figures with 10 points. Edgewood College shot 35.3 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent in the second half.
MSOE's Holly Denfeld poured in 24 points on 11-for-14 shooting to lead all scorers. Denfeld also added 13 rebounds for a double-doouble. The Raiders shot 51.7 percent in the second half and 41.7 percent for the game.
