MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Alverno College outscored Edgewood College 38-20 in the paint, and pulled away from the Eagles for an 82-54 victory at Reiman Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Alverno controlled the game for three quarters, until Edgewood College outscored the Inferno 20-11 in the final period.
Edgewood College (1-4, 0-3 NACC) traded baskets with Alverno for the first 12 points of the game, and were still within 13-10 after a Sierra Jiran jumper with two minutes left in the first quarter. However, Alverno scored their last six points of the period at the free throw line and then opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run for a 27-13 lead. Jiran hit a three-pointer and Sydney Smith made a pair of free throws to try and get the Eagles back into it, but a 10-0 run halted by baskets from Jiran and Rachel Pope still sent the Eagles into halftime down 43-22.
The Eagles trailed 50-24 in the third period, when Allison Gordon completed a three-point play and Pope scored a jump shot, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. The Inferno closed the third period on a 17-2 run to take a 71-34 lead through three quarters. Kortni Kohl's three-pointer sparked a strong closing period for the Eagles.
Pope finished with 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting and a team-high four rebounds. Jiran scored nine of her 13 points in the first half and pulled down eight rebounds. Kohl and Marissa Hoyer came off the bench to score eight points each. Gordon had three steals to lead the Eagles in that category. Edgewood College shot 33.9 percent from the field and a strong 76.5 percent at the free throw line.
Alverno College (3-3, 1-2 NACC) was paced by a double-double from Mollie Mikyska with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mackenzie Mathies and Donna Zehner added in 12 and 11 points respectively, off the bench. The Inferno shot 49.2 percent from for the game.
Edgewood College will hunt their first NACC win on the road on Saturday. The Eagles will take on Concordia University Chicago in River Forest as the second half of a doubleheader, starting at approximately 4:15 p.m.
