PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The Edgewood College volleyball team recorded its third win over a WIAC opponent this season Wednesday night, this time a victory in four sets over the UW-Platteville Pioneers on the road. Senior Jordan Winkler recorded her 1,000th career kill in the win, as the Eagles improved to 13-8 overall while the Pioneers dropped to 10-11.
The Eagles earned their third win over a WIAC foe in the same season for the first time in school history by showcasing their comeback ability in some tight sets early on. They needed extra points in the first two sets before eventually closing it out 26-24, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22.
The Eagles were down 24-22 in the first set before three-straight kills and an assisted block closed out the nail-biter. Savannah Koester recorded the first kill of the streak on an assist from Alex Zapuchlak to make it 24-23. Haley Schwenn then assisted on Emily Chaussee's kill to even things up before Chaussee gave the Eagles the lead on an unassisted kill in the next play. Renee Meister and Chaussee then combined to block Lidia Frias' attempt to close out the first set victory.
Edgewood College had to rally late again in set two by recording six of the last seven points of the set. Meister opened the rally with a kill while the Pioneers committed five errors the rest of the way. The Pioneers used a 6-0 run early on in set three and hit .195 to force a fourth set.
The Eagles were down 4-3 in the final set before going on a 8-0 run to go up 10-4. The Pioneers would slowly inch back and eventually tie things at 17 before Winkler showed what she is capable of offensively. She posted four kills—the third of which pushed her to 1,000 for her career—to close out the victory.
Winkler needed 11 kills to reach 1,000 and finished with 12. She is the eighth player to reach that milestone in school history and hit .174 on the day. Her 17 digs also tied fellow senior Rachel Tesch for the team lead.
Chaussee joined Winkler as the other Edgewood College player with a double-double (10-11). Koester also proved to be efficient in the match with nine kills and two errors in 24 swings for an attack percentage of .292. Schwenn finished with 19 assists while Zapuchlak finished right behind with 18.
Edgewood College will get back into action on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a NACC matchup with Wisconsin Lutheran College. The match will take place at the Recreation Complex in Milwaukee, Wis., and will begin at noon.
