MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team has had great luck in overtime recently, winning twice in extra time last week. On Wednesday night, however, it was Marian University who found the golden goal touch in a 1-0 victory over the Eagles. The loss snapped Edgewood College's three-match winning streak.
Edgewood College (5-7, 2-4 NACC) and Marian University battled through 90 scoreless minutes and although the Sabres had the advantage in shots, the Eagles may have had the best scoring opportunities. Just three minutes into the game Garrett Lee's cross found Luke Miller in the box. Miller eluded Marian goalkeeper Ian Chacon and gathered the loose ball, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Sabre defender. Miller also had another shot on goal saved in the 48th minute. Zach Jaske had a chance with a volley in the 86th minute, but the shot was right on Chacon.
Marian University (8-3-1, 2-2-1 NACC) controlled the run of play for much of the first overtime period until Gustavo Carmona struck the decisive blow with 11 seconds remaining. Danny Heerhold picked up ball near the right sideline and placed a perfect cross inside the goal box. Carmona came crashing is from the left wing and scored a header past Eagle goalkeeper Kyle Wood.
Lee led the Eagles with four shots, while both of Miller shots were on target. The Eagles had five shots on goal to the Sabres three, but Marian was credited with 22 total shots to just 11 for Edgewood College. Kyle Wood made two saves for the Eagles.
Edgewoood College will stay at home for the next game, a Parents' Day match with Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday, October 10. The Eagles and Falcons will kick off at 11:00 a.m. and the game can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
