Eagles still unscathed in NACC after win at Alverno

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College has yet to lose a single set in NACC play so far in the 2015 season after a sweep over the Alverno Inferno in Reiman Gymnasium Friday night. The Eagles turned in a negative attack percentage in a set one win but turned it around offensively to breeze by the Inferno in the final two. The Eagles eventually won 25-21, 25-17, 25-15.

The Eagles started set one on a 7-0 run and led 11-3 at one point before running into a bit of trouble offensively. The Inferno crept back and were down only 20-15 later on. The Eagles hit only -.031 but posted five blocks while the Inferno managed only six kills and 12 errors for an attack percentage of -.171.

Edgewood College senior Jordan Winkler exploded offensively in set two with eight kills and no errors in 15 swings for an attack percentage of .533. As a team, the Eagles had only three errors in the set and hit .355. The Eagles went on a 6-0 run early on in the set to go up 8-3 and then scored 10 of the last 13 points in the set to go up 2-0 in the match.

Six different Eagles players recorded kills in the third and final set, led by freshman Taylor Stanek's five. An 11-2 run that included kills from four different Edgewood College players made it 14-5 Eagles and the Inferno could only get as close as six points from there on out.

Winkler finished with eight kills while Elizabeth Evans and Stanek finished tied for second on the team with six. Haley Schwenn had five service aces and dished out a game-high 16 assists and Rachel Tesch paced the defensive effort with 16 digs.

Edgewood College will return to action right away on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a home triangular. The day will begin with a key NACC matchup against Dominican at 12 pm while the Eagles will then square off against UW-La Crosse at 4 pm from the Edgedome.
