LISLE, Ill. – For just the second time against a conference opponent in 2015, Edgewood College was pushed to five sets but was able to overcome a 2-1 deficit against Benedictine University to remain perfect in the NACC. The Eagles won by scores of 25-16, 25-27, 15-25, 25-20, 15-6.
Edgewood College trailed early on in the first set but used an 8-2 run to grab a 16-12 lead. The Eagles then scored nine of the last 11 points—including the final five—to close out the first set win. They nearly closed out a win in set two but allowed Benedictine to scored five of the last six points of the set after Edgewood College pulled ahead 24-22.
Five-straight points in set three gave the Eagles an early 7-4 lead but Benedictine had a 16-3 run to go up 20-10. Edgewood College made a little run to make it 22-15 but had dug too big of a hole, eventually falling in the set 25-15.
Edgewood College finally got back in the win column in set four in a back-and-forth set that ended on a 5-0 Edgewood College run. Four of those final five points were kills and one was a service ace courtesy of Emily Chaussee.
In the winner-take-all fifth set, Benedictine scored the first two points but Edgewood College went on an 11-1 run to go up 11-3. Edgewood College had three service aces in the run and Jordan Winkler posted a pair of kills. Edgewood College closed out the match with three-straight points, the first of which came on a BenU service error and the final two on kills from Chaussee.
Chaussee, a sophomore from Sun Prairie, Wis., finished with a career-high 18 kills in the match and also had 11 digs for one of two Edgewood College double-doubles on the afternoon. Winkler was the other after posting 16 kills (.308 attack percentage) and a team-high 21 digs. Rachel Tesch finished second on the team in digs with 19 while Savannah Koester was the other player to reach double figures in kills with 10.
Edgewood College will resume action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at home against Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 pm. CUW entered Saturday as the only other undefeated team in NACC play at 7-0.
