MADISON, Wis. – Impressive starts in both halves helped the Edgewood College women's soccer team to its first victory of the season at Warner Park Sunday afternoon against the St. Norbert College Green Knights. Jenna Mineau scored right out of the gates at the 3:22 mark and an own goal came at the 48:23 mark set the tone for the Eagles in a 3-2 victory.
Haley Gaines recorded her first assist of the season on a perfectly placed corner kick that Mineau put past St. Norbert goalkeeper Sarah Platzer. It was her first goal of the season and the Green Bay, Wis., native also registered three shots on the day.
Fellow senior Jennifer Dailey made it 2-0 about 30 minutes later on an unassisted goal. Dailey raced down to the right side of the box, beat the defender and lifted a shot that nearly hit the crossbar for her first goal of the year.
The Green Knights made things interesting after pulling within a goal just before the half. Mary Burke found the net at the 43:31 mark after beating Eagles goalkeeper Tori Fortney. St. Norbert responded quickly again after an own goal put the Eagles up 3-1. Shannon Jung scored less than six minutes after the blunder to make it a one-goal contest again, but the stout Eagles defensive front held off any hopes of a St. Norbert win the rest of the afternoon.
Fortney earned the win and improved to 1-1-1 with the effort. She stopped six shots and played the entire game in net. Platzer had four saves for St. Norbert.
The Eagles are at home again on Thursday, Sep. 11 for a match against Ripon College. The game will be at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona, Wis., and is set for a 6 pm start time.
