VERONA, Wis. - Veterans have done most of the heavy lifting for the Edgewood College women's soccer team thus far in 2014, but multiple fresh faces carried the team to its second victory of the season Thursday night at Reddan Soccer Park.
Liz Darkow and Hannah Menzia buried the Eagles' second and third goals, respectively, to lift the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Ripon College. Darkow, a sophomore transfer from Concordia University St. Paul, delivered her first collegiate goal that gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute. Another sophomore transfer in Taylor Pampuch assisted on the play.
Ripon's Kaylee Tadych made things interesting by pulling within one early in the second. The junior forward scored her fourth goal of the season against Edgewood College freshman goalkeeper Maddie Schroeder in the 53rd minute.
Hannah Menzia then responded with her first career goal at the college level just over 15 minutes later. The freshman midfielder broke through the Red Hawks' back defensive line after a botched handle and delivered the tally. The Eagles would control the game the rest of the way, improving their overall record to 2-1-1 on the year.
Jenna Mineau got things going again for the Eagles. The senior defender scored just 8 minutes, 33 seconds into the game to increase her season total to two. Darkow was there for the assist. Schroeder was solid in her Eagles debut, stopping nine shots in a full 90 minutes of playing time. Red Hawks goalie Sidney Blodgett stopped six saves on the night.
The Eagles will return to action looking for their third win of the season on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1 pm against Lake Forest College at Reddan Soccer Park.
