Eagles top Loras, Luther in weekend finale

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Edgewood College volleyball team bounced back from two losses on Friday to claim a pair of victories on the second day of the IIAC-NACC Challenge at Loras College. The Eagles defeated the host Duhawks in an incredibly tight 3-2 match in the morning, and then claimed a 3-1 victory over Luther College in the afternoon.

Against Loras College (8-11) no set was decided by more than two points until a 15-12 victory for Edgewood College in the decisive fifth set. The match featured an incredible 46 ties and 20 lead changes in the 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-12 Eagle win.

Jordan Winkler scored a career-high 22 kills and hit .255 for the match. Savannah Koester added 12 kills, while Katelyn Kessel had nine kills against one error for a team-high .400 attack percentage. Sarah Schuchhardt led the Eagles with three blocks to go along with nine kills of her own. Rachel Thomsen established a career-high of her own with 46 assists. Rachel Tesch posted a team-high 29 digs.

Edgewood College (9-10) returned in the afternoon for a 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Luther College. The Eagles had three players in double figures, led again by Winkler with 12 kills. Koester and Kessel posted 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Edgewood College hit .278 for the match, including .379 in the opening set.

Schucahhardt became the first Eagle in 10 years and just the third different player ever to record five solo blocks and finished with seven blocks total. Tesch and Winkler had 22 and 21 digs respectively, while Thomsen dished out 23 assists.

Edgewood College will be back home for their next two matches. The Eagles host Carroll University on Tuesday night at the Edgedome, before Alverno College comes to call on Friday night. Saturday evening is a rematch of last year's NACC Tournament final against Dominican University in River Forest, Ill.
