FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Memories of the Eagles offensive struggles early in the season are fading away fast. The Edgewood College men's soccer team scored three goals for the second straight game, claiming a 3-1 victory over Marian University. The Eagles are now unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1) since an 0-3 start.
Edgewood College (4-3-1, 2-0 NACC) held a slight edge in possession through the first 30 minutes, but both teams had scoring chances. In the 35th minute Luke Miller chased a ball into the box where Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt collided with him. Woldt was assessed a foul and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. Evan Rogaczewski converted from the spot to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The goal was Rogaczewski's second penalty kick goal in as many games for the Eagles.
The Eagles lead held up through halftime, but Marian University (3-5, 0-2 NACC) would answer in the 66th minute. Zach Peltonen scored off a Danny Heerhold free kick to tie the match at 1-1. The deadlock didn't last long however. A faulty clear by the Sabres defense in the 68th minute settled to Miller near the 18-yard line. Miller controlled the ball and rifled a shot past Marian's second goalkeeper of the night Jameson Hoerter to put Edgewood College ahead 2-1.
The Eagles added the icing on the cake in the 76th minute. Jacob Overman's cross was headed by Zander Rothering back across the box to a charging Henry Simon. Simon calmly slipped a shot from eight yards out through the legs of Hoerter, for the 3-1 lead the Eagles would hold until the final whistle.
Edgewood College held a slim 12-10 advantage in shots, but put three of their four shots on goal into the back of the net. On the other end Matt Dammen made two saves, including a point-blank blast in the first half, to earn his fourth victory of the season. After scoring just one goal in their first three games, the Eagles have now scored 10 goals in the last five matches.
The Eagles will return to Madison on Saturday for a Parents' Night match with Benedictine University. Saturday's match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. from Warner Park on Madison's northeast side.
