Eagles finish 2-0 at Lawrence Triangular

APPLETON, Wis. - The Edgewood College Eagles appeared to be well on their way to splitting their two games at the Lawrence University Triangular, but a huge comeback against Cardinal Stritch University Saturday afternoon gave the Eagles a sweep while improving their overall record to 6-8.

After beating Lawrence University in straight sets early in the afternoon, the Eagles had to claw back from a 2-0 deficit against the Wolves from Cardinal Stritch. The Eagles beat Lawrence 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 before mounting the comeback later in the afternoon. They beat Cardinal Stritch 23-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-12.

The Eagles and Wolves were knotted at nine in the fifth and final set before three-straight errors from Cardinal Stritch gave the Eagles a 12-9 lead. The Wolves scored the next two points to pull within one but the Eagles scored three of the next four points to put the match away.

Three Eagles had double-digit kill totals against Cardinal Stritch in Savannah Koester (15), Jordan Winkler (14) and Sarah Schuchhardt (11). Kendyl Danelski (15) was the lone Wolves player to reach that mark.

The Eagles hit .115 and had 60 total kills against Cardinal Stritch. Rachel Tesch had two of the team's four service aces and tied for the team lead in digs with 21.

The Eagles played perhaps their most efficient game on offense in their dominating win over Lawrence University early in the afternoon. Edgewood College hit .333 and totaled 47 kills to give them their fifth win of the season. The productive offensive attack allowed the Eagles to come back from deficits in both the first and the third sets.

In the first set, the Eagles found themselves down 15-11 but won seven of the next eight points to take the lead for good, eventually winning 25-20. After the Eagles won the second set by a score of 25-21, the Eagles were down again but this time late in the set. The Vikings led 21-17 but back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Jordan Winkler got the Eagles back on track. The Eagles eventually came out on top 25-23.

Winkler played one of her best matches of the season against Lawrence. The Menomonee Falls, Wis., native hit .345 and racked up 14 kills. Freshman Kaelyn Kessel ranked second in kills against Lawrence with nine and hit .273.

The Eagles will return home Wednesday, Sept. 24th for a 7 pm match at the Edgedome against Lakeland College.
