Eagles hold off Cougars in NACC opening match

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team's offense came out hitting on all cylinders against Concordia University Chicago in their NACC opener. However, the Eagles had to hang on for dear life to avoid a Cougar comeback before leaving with a 3-2 victory. The win marked the second straight year the Eagles have won their conference opener.

Concordia University Chicago (2-2-2, 0-1 NACC) had a 7-2 early advantage in shots over the Eagles in the first 19 minutes, but Edgewood College (3-3-1, 1-0 NACC) got on the board first. Evan Rogaczewski converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later Luke Miller converted a pass from Zander Rothering for his first career collegiate goal and Edgewood College had doubled their lead.

In the 42nd minute, Jacob Overman ended up on the receiving end of a perfect Rogaczewski cross for a seemingly secure 3-0 Edgewood College lead. However, DeAndre McLaurin struck back for Concordia Chicago just 71 seconds before halftime to give the Cougars new life at 3-1 and set up a tense second half.

The Eagles and Cougars played fairly even for the majority of the second half, but McLaurin struck again in the 73rd minute to give the Cougars a chance to tie the game late. However, the Eagles defense limited the Cougars to one shot over the final eight minutes, and Edgewood College goalkeeper Matt Dammen saved it with 40 seconds left to secure the victory.

Edgewood College will complete the third of three straight road games with a Tuesday night tilt against Marian University. The Eagles and Sabres will kickoff at 7:00 from Smith Fields in Fond du Lac.
