MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles turned in arguably their best all-around effort of the season Sunday afternoon at Reddan Soccer Park against Lake Forest College in a nail-biting 2-1 victory. Henry Simon, the lone Eagles player with multiple goals scored this season, buried the game-winner with only 34 seconds remaining in the game to give the Eagles their second victory of the season.
After a lengthy scramble in front of the Lake Forest net, Simon found proper footing and scooted the ball past Forester goalkeeper Ian Taylor. Senior Stephen Gilbert was there for the assist on the play. The Eagles defense then stood strong as the final 30 seconds rolled off the clock, never allowing the Foresters to seriously threaten.
Matt Dammen was at the top of his game against a pesky Lake Forest offense which registered 23 shots on the day, 12 of which were on target. His lone hiccup came during the 36th minute when Dayne Johnson scored his first goal of the season. Johnson received the ball only about five yards outside the net from Dylan Hartman and chipped it in past a diving Dammen to make it 1-1.
The Eagles got on board with a circus shot from Xander Bebber in the 13th minute. After Kelmend Isaj passed the ball across the box to the right side, Bebber lifted the ball up and over Taylor from a tough angle and snuck it under the crossbar in the opposite side of the net. It was the Baraboo, Wis., native's first goal of the season and third point.
Johnson and Elyas Ingram were both busy on the offensive end for Lake Forest, as each tallied five shots and combined for six on goal. Gilbert led the Eagles in shots with three while Simon was the lone player to have multiple shots on target with two.
The Eagles will get back into action Wednesday, Sept. 17 against Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. The game, which will be played at Whiting Field, is set for a 5:00 start time.
