WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team had a rough go of it against some of the top squads in the region at the Carthage College Invitational. On Sunday, the Eagles claimed a 3-0 win in the final match of the event over Alma College. Earlier in the day, Edgewood College dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Chicago.
Against Alma College, Savannah Koester and Jordan Winkler each posted 11 kills in the Eagles' second sweep of the season. Winkler also posted a team-high 14 digs, followed by Rachel Tesch's 13 digs. Setter Rachel Thomsen dished out 29 assists, while Sarah Schuchhardt had three blocks. The Eagles won all three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.
That morning, the Eagles jumped out in front of the University of Chicago with a 27-25 first set victory, but the Maroons rallied to win the final three sets 25-14, 25-21 and 25-11 to claim a 3-1 victory. Winler had a team-high 10 kills and 11 assists for a double-double. Koester had six kills and did not register an attack error in either match. Tesch compiled 27 digs, while Thomsen had 15 assists. Haley Schwenn had 12 assists to go with two service aces.
Edgewood College (4-7) will open the defense of their NACC titles from 2012 and 2013 on Tuesday with their conference opener at Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles and Falcons will start at 7:00 p.m. from the Buuck Fieldhouse in Mequon.
