MADISON, Wis. – After six matches on the road to open the season, the Edgewood College volleyball team returned to the cozy confines of the Edgedome for their home opener. However, UW-Platteville made themselves right at home with a strong 3-0 sweep of the Eagles. The Pioneers hit .322 and totaled eight blocks in the match.
UW-Platteville (4-5) grabbed control of the first set early with a 7-1 run behind four straight service points from Jennifer Schmidt, to take an 11-4 lead. The Eagles tried to rally when Savannah Koester delivered a service ace and Renee Meister and Elizabeth Evans teamed up for a block to cut the Pioneers lead to 12-8, but Edgewood College (3-4) couldn't get any closer falling 25-16.
In the second set, UW-Platteville scored four of their first six points on blocks, but the Eagles hung tough, trailing 6-5. However, Schmidt sparked the Pioneers again with four straight service points, including two kills by Linda Frias to open up a lead. Koester delivered back-to-back aces late in the set, but it wasn't enough to prevent a 25-17 win for UW-Platteville.
In the third set, Edgewood College received five kills from Evans and four kills from Jordan Winkler, but never gained the lead. The Eagles hit .179 in the final set, but couldn't offset UW-Platteville's .357 attack percentage and fell 25-17 to end the match.
Winkler ended up leading the Eagles in kills with eight, while Evans had seven. Meister had four kills and a team-best .300 attack percentage. Libero Rachel Tesch collected 15 digs, while Koester led all players with three service aces.
UW-Platteville was led by Frias with 11 kills, while Allison Jensen came off the bench to score 10 kills. Allie Carter dished out 29 assists and LeeAnn Mizgalski had a team-high 12 digs. The pioneers hit a strong .322 for the match.
Edgewood College will return to action for a weekend at the Carthage College Invitational. The Eagles will take on 15th-ranked Elmhurst College and Carthage College on Friday, before playing the University of Chicago and Alma College on Saturday.
