ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Edgewood College men's soccer team lost its season-opening match Saturday night against the Webster University Gorloks at the St. Louis Soccer Park. Webster's Frank Verdu, a sophomore from Edwardsville, Ill., was credited with the Gorloks' only goal, as a clearing pass by an Edgewood College defender deflected off of him and into the net in the 31st minute.
Webster's Ian McReynolds notched the shutout in his Gorloks debut after facing three shots and recording a save on one of them. Edgewood College's
Alexander Ribeiro had the only shot on goal for the Eagles, while
Henry Simon and
Thini Messan were the two other Eagles to tally shot attempts. Eagles goalie
Matt Dammen played all 90 minutes and stopped five shots.
The Eagles defense held strong for most of the night, as Verdu's goal in the first half was the only threat that the Gorloks had for a goal. Webster ended the contest with 10 shots on goal. Edgewood College will play its next game on Friday, Sept. 5 against UW-Whitewater. The away contest will take place at Fiskum Field and will begin at 5 pm.
