MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team is still searching for their first win of the 2014-15 season after a 74-56 setback to UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Eagles received 10 points each from Tal Diekvoss, Dylan Rusch and Dylan Heemstra, but the Titans held the Eagles at an arm's length for most of the game.
Jake Heuer got Edgewood College (0-2) off on the right foot with a put-back on the team's first possession, but that would be the Eagles only lead of the night. Five minutes into the half, UW-Oshkosh (1-1) scored a fastbreak layup by Max Schebel to take a 16-8 lead, before the Eagles received two free throws from Derek Braucht and a tough layup in the lane by Emilio Lopez. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Eagles would get. The Titans closed the first half with a 14-6 run, capped by a three-point shot from AJ Mueller to take a 44-29 lead into halftime.
The Titans had a 60-43 lead 11 minutes into the second half, when the Eagles changed up their defense and began to make a run. Heemstra scored a bucket and two free throws, while Rusch added two free throws in a 6-0 run in which the Eagles held the Titans scoreless for more than three minutes. Diekvoss buried a three-pointer with 4:55 to go to again cut the Titans' lead to 11 at 65-54, but a 9-0 UW-Oshkosh run put the Titans up 20 in the final minute to seal the game.
Diekvoss was 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-4 from the three-point line to account for his 10 points. Heemstra scored all 10 of his points in the second half, while Rusch scored six of his 10 points from the free throw line. Trevor Neale was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor for eight points. Heemstra and Trevon Ampe shared team-high rebounding honors with six boards apiece, with Ampe adding four steals. Jake Heuer led the Eagles with four assists. Edgewood College shot a solid 43.1 percent from the field, but just 2-for-13 from the three-point line.
UW-Oshkosh, meanwhile, shot 53.7 percent from the floor, and had seven different players score at least seven points in the game. Sean Dwyer came off the bench to lead the Titans with 17 points, including five three-point baskets. Schebel was 6-for-8 from the field for 12 points to represent the only other Titan in double figures.
Edgewood College will turn their attention to their NACC opener on Saturday in Milwaukee. Edgewood College will visit Wisconsin Lutheran College for a 2:00 p.m at WLC's Recreation Complex. Video and live stats are available through EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com/EagleTV.
