Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles show comeback prowess with 2OT win

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Matt Savatski's basket to make it 72-70 in double overtime was the first time the Edgewood College men's basketball team led Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday afternoon and the Eagles would hang on for their first victory of the season. The Eagles used a 5-0 run to close out the first overtime to send them to their first double overtime contest since the 2010 season and would never look back from that point in an 85-80 victory.

The Eagles trailed by as much as much as 12 points with 16:52 left in the second half but slowly closed the gap throughout the remainder of regulation. Edgewood College trailed 59-53 with just 2:52 remaining but a Tal Diekvoss three-pointer pulled the Eagles within three with 2:39 left.

After Jake Heuer hit 1-of-2 free throws, WLC's Alec Breazeale converted on a layup to stretch their lead back to four. Savatski and Diekvoss would score on the next two possessions to tie things at 61, but Kyle Stelse was fouled by Trevon Ampe with just 13 seconds left in regulation and hit both free throws. Jake Heuer was there again with just three seconds left and hit a layup to tie things up. Jake Jarnigo got a decent look at the buzzer but couldn't convert to send it to overtime.

The Eagles were down five with 2:01 left in the first overtime but another Diekvoss three and a Heuer jump shot with 47 seconds left tied things up at 70. The Eagles defense held strong and forced misses from WLC in their final two possessions of the period.

Kyle Stelse, who finished with a game-high 23 points, answered Savatski's early basket in double overtime to tie it at 72, but the Eagles would score six-straight points on buckets from Trevor Neale, Diekvoss and Rusch. The Eagles were then 7-of-10 on free throws after Rusch's score to close out the game.

Diekvoss came up clutch for Edgewood College in the win. He had eight points in the final 10 minutes of regulation and five over the course of both overtime periods. He led the team in points with 16 and was 4-for-6 from deep. Rusch finished with 15 points while Trevon Ampe scored 14 points off the bench for a career-high.

Jarnigo also eclipsed the 20-point mark for WLC and wound up with 22 on 7-of-22 shooting. Brett Lubbe registered the game's only double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lubbe was a force down low and was a big reason why the Warriors out-rebounded the Eagles 53-38.

The Eagles shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) and had 32 bench points compared to just eight from the Warriors. They also outscored WLC in the paint 40-24. The Eagles will get back into action Tuesday at No. 7 UW-Stevens Point. The non-conference matchup will take place in Quandt Fieldhouse and will start at 7 pm.
