Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles drop season opener to Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Edgewood College women's basketball team fell to Dubuque University in its first game of the 2014-15 season Saturday evening at the Stoltz Sports Center as part of the University of Dubuque Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles were just 6-of-23 from the field in the first half and trailed 51-26 at the break. Edgewood College scored 53 points in the second half but were unable to come back from the early deficit and ultimately fell 94-79.

Edgewood College junior guard Jazmin Little would score the first bucket of the game but that would be the final time the Eagles would lead in the contest. The Eagles trailed 13-12 with 13:54 left in the first half but Dubuque would use a 16-0 run to push the score to 29-12. The Spartans would shoot 44.4 percent from the field in the first half and the Eagles turned the ball over 15 times.

Rachel Pope finished with 28 points, which was just one shy of her career high, which came against Loras on Nov. 16 of last year. Seven of those 28 came in the first half, while Courtney Spangler and Mariah Hill each had four points at the break. Dubuque's Jenna Kotas got off to a hot start and was a big reason why the Spartans held the big halftime lead. She scored 16 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting and also had four rebounds.

The Eagles would turn around to shoot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the second half, but the Spartans kept their up-tempo offense churning and led by as many as 29 at one point. The Spartans kept feeding it down low and finished with 44 points in the paint compared to just 28 from the Eagles. The Spartans also had 18 fast break points compared to just two from the Eagles.

Pope would finish 7-for-14 from the field and 12-of-16 from the stripe for the Eagles. Courtney Spangler (12) and Mariah Hill (11) were the other two Eagles to finish in double figures. Kotas wound up with 22 points, while Meggie Schmidt was second on the Spartans in scoring with 18.

Edgewood College will get right back into action Sunday afternoon to finish the University of Dubuque Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles will play Loras College at 1 pm at the Stoltz Sports Center.
