DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Edgewood College women's basketball team had trouble finding an answer defensively again Sunday to wrap up the University of Dubuque Tipoff Tournament and fell to Loras College by a score of 99-71. The Duhawks used a monster first half in which they scored 52 points and took advantage of 20 Edgewood College turnovers over the course of the entire game to notch their first victory of the season.
The Eagles were down just two points after a Sierra Jiran layup pulled the Eagles within 11-9, but the floodgates opened from there on out for the Duhawks. They would score 22 of the next 29 points and would keep the pedal to the metal into the break and led 52-33 at the halfway mark. The Duhawks would keep things rolling throughout the second half and led by 36 at one point.
Edgewood College was dominated down low for the second-straight day, as the Duhawks scored 44 points in the paint and had 24 second chance points. Lori Obendorf led the charge for Loras in the post, as she snagged 16 boards and scored 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting. She also had three of the team's four blocks on the day.
The Eagles shot 33.3 percent (10-for-30) in the first half and 29.4 percent (10-for-34) in the second. They also racked up 23 points off the bench with Jazmin Little (10) and Jiran (9) leading the way. Rachel Pope (14) and Mariah Hill (13) were the other two Eagles to score at least 10 points while Courtney Spangler just missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards. The Duhawks' Kaitlin Phillips led all scorers with 19 points.Â
Edgewood College will get back into action Thursday, Nov. 20 at home against Alverno College. The game, which will be the first NACC matchup of the season for the Eagles, will begin at 7 pm at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
