APPLETON, Wis. – Few things in life are certain. Death, taxes and now perhaps you can add Jenna Mineau scoring penalty kicks. The Edgewood College women's soccer senior buried two attempts from the spot, and goalkeeper Tori Fortney kept her sheet clean in a 2-0 shutout of Lawrence University. The win wrapped up the Eagles non-conference portion of their schedule and gives the team seven wins in their last eight games.
Edgewood College (9-3-1) were outshooting the Vikings 7-4 in the first part of the opening half, when Jennifer Dailey was taken down in the box in the 35th minute. Mineau scored that penalty kick for her sixth goal of the season for a 1-0 Eagles lead. Meanwhile Tori Fortney made five saves in the first half including two in the final six minutes before halftime.
Lightning struck Lawrence University (3-6-2) a second time in the 76th minute when the Vikings were whistled for another foul in the penalty area. This time Mineau herself was fouled, and like the first time she converted for a 2-0 lead. Mineau is now 9-for-9 in her career on penalty kicks, which extends her school record. She has converted three PKs this season.
The second goal ultimately didn't matter, as Fortney and the Eagles defense was unbeatable on the other end of the field. Fortney finished with seven saves, and the Eagles limited the Vikings to just 12 shots and no corner kicks. Fortney is now 7-3-1 on the year with two shutouts. Dailey ended the game with five shots including two on goal, while Liz Darkow and Mineau each had four shots.
Edgewood College returns home to Warner Park on Saturday to meet Dominican University in a NACC clash. The Eagles and Stars will get underway at 11:00 a.m.
