MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team made sure quality counted more than quantity in their 2-0 victory over Dominican University on Saturday. The Stars outshot the Eagles 13-5, but all five of Edgewood College's shots were on net. Liz Darkow and Taylor Pampuch scored for the Eagles.
It was just the eighth minute when the Eagles struck first. Jennifer Dailey and a Dominican defender both leaped for a deflected ball near the top of the penalty area, but Dailey won it with a header into empty space to the left. Darkow was in the right spot to run onto the ball and blast a shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Darkow's third of the season, but frirst since a goal against Beloit College (10-3-1, 5-1 NACC) on September 16.
Dominican University (7-6, 4-3 NACC) applied the early pressure in the second half with three shots in the first five minutes, including one from Leah Tednes that forced a save from Eagle goalkeeper Tori Fortney. However, the first reasonable chance the Eagles had, in the 51st minute, they capitalized. Carley Hanko drove the ball hard into the right side of the penalty area and laid a pass back to the middle for Pampuch. The sophomore transfer's hard, low shot sliced through a crowd and beat Dominican goalkeeper Sara Stepanovich into the lower right corner. For Pampuch, it was her eighth goal of the season, which ties her with Dailey for the team lead.
Fortney and the Eagles defense did the rest, forcing many of Dominican's shots from long range. Fortney did come up with a fantastic diving save off a shot from the Stars' Trisha Neidlinger in the 87th minute to preserve her shutout. The game was Fortney's second consecutive clean sheet and third of the season.
For the moment, Edgewood College moves into second place in the NACC with a 5-1 record. The Eagles will be at home again on Wednesday evening for a match with Wisconsin Lutheran College.
