AURORA, Ill. - In a rematch of last year's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championship match, the Edgewood College Eagles failed to get anything going offensively and couldn't rebound after a slow start to ultimately fall 2-0 to the Aurora University Spartans.
Aurora, who also entered with a perfect 4-0 record in the NACC and were ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA Central Region rankings, got on board just 2 minutes, 22 seconds into the match after an Alexis Bejarano goal slid past a diving
Tori Fortney. The Spartans would then dominate possession for much of the rest of the first half, as the Eagles would attempt just two shots--both by
Liz Darkow--for the remainder of the first half.Â
The Spartans made it 2-0 in the 26th minute from a Samantha McLaughlin goal assisted by Nicci Bermudes. It was McLaughlin's first of the season and the Eagles would have to play catch up the rest of the way. The Eagles, who beat the Spartans in regular season play last year by a score of 1-0 but fell by the same score in the NACC championship game, would attempt three more shots in the second half but were outshot 23-5 overall in the contest. The Eagles also failed to put a shot on net, while the Spartans totaled nine shots on goal.
Liz Darkow was the most active Eagles player on offense, registering three of the team's five shots.
Fortney finished with seven saves while dropping to 6-3-1 on the year. Spartans goalkeeper Rachael Warnock earned the win and improved to 8-2 on the year.
The Eagles will get back into action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 against Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Game time is set for 4 pm.
