AURORA, Ill. - Two Aurora University goals within less than five minutes in the first half proved to be too much for the Edgewood College Eagles Saturday afternoon at Vago Field, as the Spartans survived an Eagles comeback attempt and hung on to win 3-1. The Eagles made it a one-goal game in the 74th minute but the Spartans would add another in the closing moments to put the game away.
Edgewood College, which now sits at 5-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, outshot the Spartans 14-13 but only had three shots on goal in the contest. The Spartans, who are now 7-3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NACC, had 10 of their 13 shots on target. Jacob Goehring got the Spartans on the scoreboard in the 26th minute and Jason O'Brien added to the Spartans lead less than five minutes later after a header made its way past Eagles goaltender
Matt Dammen.Â
Luke Miller, a freshman forward from Madison, Wis., scored his third goal of the season to pull within one in the 74th minute.
Stephen Gilbert, who scored his first goal of the season Wednesday night against Lakeland College, was there for the assist. The Eagles put pressure on the Spartans defense for extended periods of time after Miller's goal but were unable to capitalize and tie things up.Â
As the Eagles scrambled to get the offense going in the final minutes, the Spartans pushed it deep into Eagles territory and drew a penalty kick on a foul right inside the top of the box with just two seconds left. Dammen saved the O'Brien attempt but O'Brien was there for the rebound and pushed it past Dammen with just 20 seconds remaining. Dammen finished the game with seven saves, while Spartans keeper Chris Donner recorded two saves to capture the win.
The Eagles will return to action right away tomorrow against non-conference foe Beloit College. The game will begin at 1 pm at the Strong Complex in Beloit, Wis.
