MADISON, Wis. -
Henry Simon recorded one of the more impressive goals of the 2014 season Thursday afternoon at Reddan Soccer Park against Wisconsin Lutheran and it couldn't have come at a better time. Just over four minutes into overtime,
Evan Rogaczewski took a free kick from about 35 yards out and found Simon racing across the box. Simon dove and headed the ball past Warriors goaltender Nick Van Pay to give the Eagles a 2-1 win and to get their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference record back to .500.
The Eagles (8-7-1 overall, 4-4 NACC) had only two shots on goal in the match but both resulted in goals to keep the Eagles in the hunt for a berth in the NACC Championship Tournament. The Eagles entered the game in sixth place but jumped past Concordia Wisconsin (3-4-1 NACC) to move into fifth place. The Eagles now stand two points ahead of CUW and each have two league contests remaining.
The Eagles had trouble finding a rhythm on offense in the first half and were outshot 14-1. They bumped up the intensity as the second half progressed and eventually found the back of the net in the 56th minute.
Luke Miller scored his fifth goal of the season after a long 1-on-1 battle with a defender along the left side. He bolted in closer to the middle of the field at the top of the box and put it past Van Pay.
The Warriors kept the offensive pressure steady, as they totaled 12 shots in the second half. One of those came off the foot of Reed Luengen in the 80th minute that snuck past Eagles goalkeeper
Matt Dammen. A cross that came rolling in from the left side scooted past many players in the box but eventually made its way to Luengen, who promptly tapped it in past a diving Dammen to tie things at one in the closing moments. The Eagles managed two shots after that point, as
Xander Bebber had his attempt blocked and Simon had his shot in the closing seconds sail wide right.Â
The Warriors had two corner kick opportunities within the first three minutes of overtime but failed to capitalize. The Eagles drew a foul just one minute after the Warriors' second corner kick chance. Rogaczewski and Simon took care of the rest to give the Eagles their first overtime victory (not including penalty kick shootout wins) since a 3-2 double overtime victory over Lakeland College on Oct. 1 of last season.
The Warriors won the shots on goal battle 13-2, while Dammen's 12 saves were just two off of his career-high. With the win Dammen improved to 8-7-1 on the year.
The Eagles will get back into action Saturday, Oct. 25 at Rockford University. The match will take place at Sam Greeley Field in Rockford, Ill., and is set for a 1 pm start time.
