MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College women's soccer team had a chance to clinch at least a No. 2 seed in the NACC Championship Tournament on Senior Night Wednesday at Reddan Soccer Park against Concordia University Wisconsin, but the Falcons prevailed by scoring three goals within nine minutes in the second half to come away with a 3-2 win.
After a fairly even first 40 minutes,
Haley Gaines sniped a free kick shot from about 25 yards out from the right side that soared over Falcons goalkeeper Ariana Worthing to light up the scoreboard for the first time on the night. The Eagles would take the 1-0 lead with them into the half despite being outshot 10-5.
Carley Pfannerstill then got the Falcons on board to tie things at one in the 57th minute. She scored her 13th goal of the season on a strike from about 15 yards out at the top of the box. The Eagles marched right back into Falcons territory and
Jennifer Dailey drew a foul just inside the box for a penalty kick less than a minute after Pfannerstill's goal.
Jenna Mineau, who entered the game as the school's record holder on penalty kicks (9-for-9), blasted one past Worthing to quickly regain the lead.
Concordia Wisconsin would strike again just over three minutes later, as Abigail Freeland shot one past a diving
Tori Fortney from the top left of the box to tie things at two. The scoring binge would continue, as Emily Ciesielczyk netted the game-winner less than five minutes later after deking defenders on the left side of the box before beating Fortney from close range at a tough angle. The Eagles would only muster one more shot the rest of the way while the Falcons kept the pressure steady and registered 12 more shots before the final whistle.
The Falcons attempted 26 shots on the night, 12 of which were on goal. The Eagles tallied nine shots and five on goal in the effort and Fortney stopped nine shots on the night. Her first save of the game was her 200th of her career.
Pfannerstill carried the Falcons offensively and attempted 13 shots on the night, while the Eagles had two players record multiple shots in
Liz Darkow (4) and
Haley Gaines (3).
The Eagles will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 28 against MSOE away from home. The match at Viets Field in Milwaukee, Wis., will begin at 7 pm.
