MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team could have given its postseason aspirations a boost with a win against league leader MSOE on Tuesday night. However, the Raiders would not allow the Eagles the chance, scoring once in each half for a 2-0 victory. Edgewood College is currently tied for the sixth and final NACC Tournament berth.
Edgewood College (7-7-1, 3-4 NACC) was outshot by the Raiders 9-1 in the first half, but Eagles' goalkeeper Matt Dammen made four saves in the first 23 minutes to keep the match scoreless. In the 33rd minute MSOE (14-3, 8-0 NACC) finally broke through. The Raiders scored off a free kick which was headed into the middle and finished by Brock Shilling from eight yards out. Stephen Gilbert tallied the Eagles only shot in the first half; a header which sailed wide in the 14th minute.
In the second half, Gilbert recorded the first of three Eagles' shots that were on target in the 49th minute, but Raiders goalkeeper Garrett Farin was up to the task each time. Silas Linares added an insurance goal for MSOE in the 73rd minutes scoring on a blast from 30 yards out. Jacob Overman and Henry Simon had the other two shots on goal for Edgewood College. Dammen made six saves for the Eagles.
The Eagles slipped into a sixth place tie with Concordia University Chicago with the loss, however, the Eagles defeated the Cougars head-to-head and still hold a game in hand on the schedule. Edgewood College's next match will be at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against Wisconsin Lutheran College. Thursday's match is a rescheduled date from last week's postponement.
