Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gilbert and Miller score as Eagles top Sabercats

MADISON, Wis. - Two goals less than seven minutes apart was enough for the Edgewood College men's soccer team to take down Maranatha Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Reddan Soccer Park in the Eagles' final non-conference game of the season. Edgewood College's defense was the story again, as they forced Maranatha into many desperation shots and held them to only two shots on goal.

Things were fairly even throughout the first 20 minutes of the contest, but Stephen Gilbert one-touched a perfect pass from the right side of the box off the foot of Zander Rothering to net his second goal of the season. The goal came in the 22nd minute and it was Gilbert's second of the year.

A beautiful header pass from Henry Simon less than seven minutes later set Luke Miller up with his fourth goal of the season. After a pass came in from the right side, Simon leaped and was able to punch the ball over the last Maranatha defender right to Miller's feet. Miller put the ball past Sabercats goaltender Charles Leeds to put the Eagles up 2-0.

The two goals midway through the first half proved to be plenty, as the Eagles held strong on defense and forced Maranatha to take countless shots from long range. The Sabercats managed 13 shots on the night but many were well off target. Matt Dammen had two saves in the win and improved to 7-6-1. The Eagles, meanwhile, had six of their eight total shots on target. Simon and Miller were the lone Eagles to finish with multiple shots, as each finished with three.

Edgewood College plays next on Tuesday at MSOE. The game is set to begin at 7 pm and will be played at Viets Field in Milwaukee, Wis.
