Evans pounds out 15 kills in win over Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team continued to climb the conference standings and move closer to clinching a NACC Tournament berth with a 3-1 victory (25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18) over Marian University on Tuesday night. Sophomore Elizabeth Evans set a new career-high with 15 kills in the match.

Edgewood College (14-11, 5-2 NACC) grabbed control of the first set with a 5-0 run on the serve of Jordan Winkler to give the Eagles a 17-12 advantage. Evans, Renee Meister and Carley Reuter had kills in that run. The Eagles finished the set on Savannah Koester's second service ace of the set.

After Marian University (7-16, 3-4 NACC) claimed a 25-22 victory in the second set, the Eagles reasserted themselves with a dominating third set. Evans sparked the third set with a five kills in the Eagles' first eight points. Leading 8-7, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run behind four kills from Reuter, to run away with the set. The Eagles led start-to-finish in the fourth set after taking a 4-0 lead to start the set on a pair of kills from Winkler. Edgewood College hit .358 in the final two sets after hitting just .090 in the first two sets.

Evans 15 kills broke her previous career-high of 14 set last season against Carroll University. She hit .520 for the match and didn't commit an error after the first set. Winkler had 11 kills and 19 digs for her 15th double-double of the season. Reuter came off the bench for nine kills, while Meister had eight kills and four block assists. Rachel Tesch had a match-high 25 digs from her libero position. Haley Schwenn led the Eagles with 28 assists and Rachel Thomsen had 21 assists. The Eagles hit .224 for the match.

Edgewood College remains tied for third in the NACC with Aurora University, who the Eagles host on Saturday. The Eagles' Friday evening opponent, Benedictine University, sits one-half match behind Edgewood College and Aurora.
