NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A new year, an even better start. The Edgewood College women's volleyball team showed what they are made of as the Eagles swept two non-conference opponents. In the first match of the Christopher Newport Captains Classic, Edgewood College downed SUNY-New Paltz 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21). The Eagles followed that with another 3-1 victory over Lyncburg College (28-26, 25-22, 19-25, 25-12).
Edgewood College took advantage of 10 New Paltz errors in the first set to cruise to a 25-16 victory. The Hawks turned things around to take set three from the Eagles, but the fourth and final set again belonged to Edgewood College in a 25-21 victory. Overall, New Paltz finished with 38 errors, which the Eagles did not let go to waste. Jessica Martin and Jordan Winkler tallied double digit kills while Lindsey Swansby handed out 35 assists. Winkler also led the Eagles in digs, with 16.
In the second match of the day, Lynchburg College gave Edgewood College all they could handle in the first set. Down 26-25, the Eagles capitalized on two Hornets' errors and Wedvick sent Edgewood College to the second set up 1-0 with a kill for the win. After a narrow 25-22 victory in set two, Edgewood College was held to just nine kills in the third as Lynchburg grabbed the 25-19 win. The fourth set belonged to the Eagles as they pounded home 10 kills with just one error for an attack percentage of .500. Six different Edgewood College players had at least five kills, with freshmen Elizabeth Evans and Carley Reuter leading the way at seven apiece. Swansby added 30 assists to go along with her team-high five service aces. Three Eagles finished with double digit digs with Rachel Tesch taking the honors at 18 digs in addition to three aces.
Edgewood College will conclude their season opening tournament tomorrow as they face Berry College and fifth ranked Christopher Newport University. The match against Berry College will be at 2:00 p.m. ET from the Freeman Center followed by a duel with the host school at 4:30 p.m. ET.
