Eagles roll Sabres in NACC Tourney opener

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – With an entire week off between matches, some may have thought the Edgewood College volleyball team would be a bit rusty in the conference tournament opener. The Eagles proved doubters otherwise and downed No. 8 Marian University 3-1 to advance to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Semifinals.

After 11 Marian errors allowed Edgewood College to take a 25-11 set one victory, the Eagles steamrolled the Sabres 25-8 in set two. Edgewood College hit a whopping .542 with 13 kills and zero errors led by senior Jessica Martin's six kills. After allowing a total of just 19 points in the first two sets, the Eagles (25-7) looked as if a sweep was inevitable, but Marian had a different idea.

Edgewood College earned the first three points of the third frame, but Marian responded with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 5-3 advantage. The two teams traded sideouts before the Sabres sandwiched kills around an Eagles' error for a five point lead. Again the teams traded points, but Edgewood College could not climb back from the deficit. The Eagles ended the third set with four consecutive errors to allow Marian to snag the set victory. The Sabres (9-21) had 10 kills with only three errors while Edgewood College hit .026 with 10 errors.

Despite the setback, the Eagles came out strong in the fourth, tallying the first five points of the set behind serves from Jordan Winkler. A service error gave Marian their first point, but Edgewood College pushed their lead to seven after a kill from Lindsey Swansby. The Sabres climbed back within three, but Martin and Elizabeth Evans combined for nine kills in the set to push the lead and take the frame 25-17.

Martin led Edgewood College with 12 kills while Katie Wedvick piled up nine without an error while hitting .529. Swansby dished out 34 assists while Rachel Tesch led with 19 digs.

The Eagles will host No. 4 Lakeland College on Thursday after the Muskies took down No. 5 Concordia Wisconsin 3-2 in their quarterfinal match. Live stats and live video will be provided for the 7:00 p.m. match.
