Eagles down Stars in five set nail-biter

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – With an undefeated conference record on the line, the Edgewood College volleyball team welcomed Dominican University to the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Saturday afternoon. It wasn't easy, but Edgewood College pulled out a five-set thriller to preserve their perfect Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference mark.

After winning the first set, the Eagles fell behind 2-1 following a pair of Dominican victories. Edgewood College rallied to win the fourth, setting up a crucial deciding fifth set showdown. The Eagles and the Stars traded points before Dominican gained a three point advantage at 8-5. Edgewood College used a kills by Sarah Schuchhardt and Elizabeth Evans coupled with two Stars' errors to rally for a 9-8 lead. Again the two teams swapped points, but with the set tied 10-10, Dominican committed two errors to hand Edgewood College a lead they would not relinquish. Jordan Winkler gave the Eagles their 13th point before Jessica Martin owned the final two kills of the match to seal the 3-2 victory.

The Eagles showed nerves early on in the first set, but gathered themselves to rally from a nine-point deficit and take a 25-23 victory. Dominican jumped ahead with a 25-22 second set victory followed by a 25-21 triumph in the third, but the Eagles evened the match after hitting .348 with 18 kills in the fourth frame to set up the dramatic finish.

Martin had a career-high 20 kills in the match, hitting .348 on 46 total attacks. Winkler and Schuchhardt also had double-digit numbers with 15 and 13 kills each, respectively. Lindsey Swansby handed out a season-high 43 assists while five different Edgewood College players had at least 10 digs. Rachel Tesch and Winkler held honors with 25 digs each. The Eagles had seven kills and three errors in the deciding fifth set while the Stars committed six errors with six kills.
