Box Score MADISON, Wis. - The Marian University volleyball team seemingly had barely stepped off the bus, when the Eagles struck. Edgewood College pounded out 46 kills, including 17 in a punishing first set, in blowing by the Sabres 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match Tuesday night. The Eagles secured their third consecutive 20-win season and improved to 7-0 in the NACC.
Edgewood College (20-6, 7-0 NACC) ran out to an 8-2 lead in the first set and never looked back. Six different Eagles had at least two kills in the opening set, led by Sarah Schuchhardt who was a perfect 5-for-5 on attacks. Samantha Himmelspach served seven straight points to push the Eagles to a 16-4 lead in the middle of the set.
Marian University (7-17, 2-5 NACC) gained their first lead of the game at 4-3 in the second set. The Sabres hung close at 12-12, until Lindsey Swansby served for the Eagles. Jessica Martin had three kills, while Elizabeth Evans and Schuchhardt had one each in a 5-0 run that put Edgewood College ahead for good. Jordan Winkler had four kills in the middle set, while Swansby had 11 digs.
It was a similar story in the third set, as the Eagles went on an 8-1 run to turn a 6-6 score into a 14-7 advantage. Martin again had three kills to spark that run. Leading 22-16 with Rachel Thomsen serving, Katie Wedvick sandwiched two kills around a Sabre attack error to end the match.
Those final two kills put Wedvick over the top as the evening's kill leader with 11. Martin and Schuchhardt each had nine kills. Edgewood College's middle hitter had a field day against the Sabres, as Schuchhardt hit .667 and Katie Wedvick hit .500. Combined the middle duo had 20 kills and just two errors. Winkler chipped in eight kills and 15 digs, while Swansby handed out 33 assists. Defensively, four Eagles were in double figures in digs, led by libero Rachel Tesch with 17. In addition to Winkler, Swansby had 15 digs and Rachel Thomsen had 11.
The Eagles stand in front of a big test on Friday night in Lisle, Ill. as the lone remaining unbeaten teams in NACC play square off. Edgewood College will travel to Benedictine (14-10, 8-0 NACC) for a showdown at the Rice Center. Benedictine will provide live video and live stats.
