MADISON, Wis. – To summarize the Edgewood College volleyball triangular, UW-Oshkosh won the first two matches and Mother Nature claimed the third. The Titans swept both Edgewood College and the University of Dubuque, before a power outage caused by a large thunderstorm halted the match between the Eagles and the Spartans late in the first set. The two teams will resume the match on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. in a fully lit Todd Wehr Edgedome.
Edgewood College head coach Paul Schlomer might have wished someone would have turned out the lights on the first match of the day. UW-Oshkosh kept the Eagles off balance from nearly the beginning of the match. The teams were tied 10-10, before Robyn Eggert served off six straight points, aided by two Edgewood College attack errors. The Eagles couldn't recover and dropped the first set 25-14.
Attack errors became a reoccurring theme for Edgewood College (3-2) much of the night. The Eagles best hitting set came in the second, when they had seven kills and six attack errors, but still fell 25-17. Edgewood College started off the third set with a 5-1 lead behind an ace from Rachel Tesch and a kill from Katie Wedvick. The Eagle momentum didn't last long, however. UW-Oshkosh (4-2) tied the match at 12-12 and used a 6-0 run to seize control. The Titans closed out the match with a 25-15 third set victory.
Sarah Schuchhardt led the Eagles with eight kills against just one error for a .333 attack percentage. Lindset Swansby had a team-high 12 assists and seven digs. Wedvick accounted for four assisted blocks.
UW-Oshkosh swept the University of Dubuque 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 setting up the evening's final match between the Spartans and Edgewood College. The Eagles led 20-15 in the first set when a strong thunderstorm knocked out power to the Edgewood College campus and thrust the Edgedome into darkness. The teams and spectators waited about 30 minutes to see if power could be restored, but eventually the match was declared suspended.
