RIVER FOREST, Ill. – A rematch of last year's Northern Athletics Conference Tournament title match showed all the signs of another intense five-set match. Instead, Edgewood College turned it into a statement. The Eagles went on the road and swept preseason favorite Dominican University 25-14, 25-22, 25-23, in what is fast becoming one of the NAC's best volleyball rivalries.
Edgewood College (14-4, 4-1 NAC) tried to seize control early, winning the first four points of the match, but Dominican battled back for a 7-7 tie. However, the Eagles launched a suffocating 10-2 run sparked by kills from Kaylin Wayne and Lindsey Swansby and ended with a kill from Jessica Martin. The Eagles hit .306 for the set and rolled on to a 25-14 victory.
The second set belonged to Mallory Palmer. The senior outside hitter hammered out nine kills and committed just one error in a dominating performance. Still, the Eagles trailed Dominican University (14-3, 4-1 NAC) 14-8 until Martin led the rally back. The junior from East Troy scored three consecutive kills to bring the Eagles within 15-14. Soon after Palmer's seventh kills of the set gave the Eagles an 18-17 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Palmer appropriately ended the set 25-22 with a service ace.
Edgewood College trailed early again in the third set. The Eagles were down 15-9 before a kill from Martin and two more from Palmer helped build a 6-0 run and tie the match. The match would still be tied at 23-23, when Dominican's Jacy Lawrence was whistled for back-to-back ball handling errors to end the match in favor of the Eagles.
Palmer led all hitters with 16 kills and a sparkling .405 attack percentage. She committed just one attack error in 37 attempts. Martin and Katie Wedvick had eight kills apiece with Wedvick adding three assisted blocks. Sam Himmelspach seemed to cover the entire court, racking up 27 digs. Junior setter Swansby had 33 assists and three assisted blocks.
Dominican was led by Jacy Lawrence and Claire Dezelski with eight and seven kills, respectively. The Stars hit just .058 for the match, hampered by 21 attack errors.
