MADISON, Wis. – The lights stayed on and the Edgewood College volleyball team looked their usual powerful self on Monday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Eagles claimed their first home victory of the 2012 season with a 3-1 win over Carroll University. Edgewood College claimed the match by scores of 26-24, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17.

Edgewood College (8-4) and the Pioneers battled through a tight first set, which featured 16 ties and 10 lead changes. Tied at 24, Kaylin Wayne scored a kill to bring the Eagles to their second set point. At 25-24, Carroll University setter Samantha Derynda was whistled for a ball-handling error to give the Eagles their final point of the set.

The Eagles pulled out the defensive weapons to force Carroll University (4-9) into seven attack errors in the second set, including three blocks by Edgewood College. Meanwhile, Mallory Palmer started to heat up scoring five kills without an error as the Eagles took a 25-16 victory.

Carroll University rallied back with 17 kills in the third set to take a 25-21 win and give themselves some hope heading into the fourth set. However, Edgewood College reloaded the cannons, pounding out 19 kills and a .385 hitting percentage in the final set. The Eagles led start to finish in the fourth set and claimed a 25-17 win.

Palmer led the way for the Eagles, scoring 18 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Wayne had a fantastic match, piling up nine kills with no errors and whopping .600 attack percentage. Libero Sam Himmelspach had 20 digs, marking her fifth match this season with at least 20 digs. Lindsey Swansby had 41 assists, while Katie Wedvick had three assisted blocks.

The Pioneer tandem of Kelly Sloyan and Emily Goebert both reached double figures for Carroll with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Libero Jenna Shea led the Pioneers with 20 digs.

Edgewood College will return to Northern Athletics Conference action on Wednesday night when they face Wisconsin Lutheran College at the Edgedome. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
