WINONA, Minn. – It may have taken the Edgewood College volleyball team two sets to clear the sleep from their eyes on Saturday morning, but once they did, UW-La Crosse and Simpson College couldn't stop them. Edgewood College roared back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat UW-La Crosse in five sets, and then defeated Simpson College in four sets to conclude the St. Mary's University Sugar Loaf Classic. Mallory Palmer and Kaylin Wayne were named to the all-tournament team.
Edgewood College (3-1) dropped the first two sets to UW-La Crosse by scores of 26-24 and 25-23. Facing the prospect of being swept, head coach Paul Schlomer's squad rallied. The Eagles hammered out 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage to win the third set 25-15. After pulling out a narrow 26-24 victory in the fourth set, Edgewood College rolled past UW-La Crosse (0-3) 15-9 in the final set.
Palmer blasted UW-La Crosse for 23 kills, with Jessica Martin scoring 15 kills. Sophomore Sarah Schuchhardt dominated the middle of the floor with 11 kills against no errors and four blocks. Sam Himmelspach had a team-high 24 of the Eagles' 93 digs. Setter Lindsey Swansby handed out a massive 51 assists.
Edgewood College had little time to recover from their marathon with UW-La Crosse, as they moved directly into their final match of the tournament against Simpson College (0-4). The Eagles weathered the Storm with a 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17 victory. Palmer again led the Eagles with 13 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. Katie Wedvick posted six kills and three assisted blocks. Himmelspach turned in her third-straight 20-dig match with a season-high 26 digs.
With a three-match winning streak in their back pocket, Edgewood College returns to the Todd Wehr Edgedome for their season opener. The Eagles will host UW-Oshkosh and the University of Dubuque in a triangular on Tuesday. Edgewood College will play at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., while the Titans and Spartans will meet at 6:00 p.m. EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com will have live video and live statistics for all three matches.
