Eagles earn road wins over Rockford and Aurora

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's tennis team earned a pair of wins on Saturday, pushing their Northern Athletics Conference winning streak to three dual matches. The Eagles first took an 8-1 win at Rockford College before traveling to Aurora University and taking a narrow 5-4 decision.

The Eagles opened the match against Rockford (0-3, 0-2 NAC) by winning all three doubles matches. Cody Strebig and Max Divelbiss took their No. 1 doubles match 8-5 over Mladen Ubiparipovic and Alex Kadamian while Tim Morgan and Michael Wanta topped their No. 2 doubles match over Stephen Kadamian and Nathan Sweet by the same score. Eric Gavinski and Edwin Mendoza won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles over Sam Conchi-Medina and Trey Welch.

Divelbiss and Morgan made quick work of the singles matches, winning 6-1, 6-0 and No. 3 and 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, respectively. Wanta defeated Conchi-Medina at No. 4 singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-2, and Gavinski topped Welch 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Mendoza made it an 8-1 final with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sweet at No. 4 singles.

After the drive down to Aurora, the Eagles hoped their momentum would continue, and it did early. Edgewood College (4-16, 3-1 NAC) took two out of the three doubles matches against the Spartans (2-4, 2-1 NAC). Morgan and Wanta took a close 9-7 win over Anthony Emmanouil and Matt Butler at No. 2 doubles while Gavinski and Mendoza cruised to an 8-2 win over Brett Wilder and Connor Propp at No. 3 doubles.

Divelbiss defeated Butler 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Mendoza topped Wilder 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles to knot the dual match at 4-4. The dual match came down to No. 6 singles where Gavinski squared off with Propp. The first set went to a tiebreaker with Propp winning narrowly, 7-6 (7-5). However, Gavinski bounced back to take the second set 6-3 and eventually gave the Eagles the win with his 6-1 third set victory.

Edgewood College will be in action again on Wednesday when they host Marian University at Rennebohm Park in Madison. The dual match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
