MADISON, Wis. - The Aurora University volleyball team night have been hoping to catch Edgewood College in let-down mode , but the Eagles wouldn't let it happen. Just 16 hours after a huge win over Benedictine, Edgewood College returned to the Todd Wehr Edgedome to sweep past the Spartans 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 and extend their school record winning streak to 12 straight matches.
Edgewood College (19-4, 8-1 NAC) used a 7-1 run in the middle of the first set to open up a 15-7 lead. Sam Himmelspach, Katie Wedvick and Jessica Martin all scored kills and Wedvick and Lindsey Swansby teamed up for block during that stretch. Mallory Palmer led the Eagles with four kills in the first set victory.
Aurora University (8-11, 4-4 NAC) forced an Edgewood College timeout by taking an early 9-4 lead. The Eagles regrouped and tied the match at 12-12 on a solo block from Sarah Schuchhardt. The Spartans were still within striking distance at 20-18, but the Eagles scored the final five points of the set in part on kills from Palmer and Wedvick and another assisted block from Wedvick and Swansby.
The Eagles posted their best hitting percentage of the match in the third set at .333, but Aurora University hung right with Edgewood College the entire set forcing seven tie scores and two lead changes. It appeared Edgewood College had seized control on two Palmer kills sandwiched around another Wedvick kill to give the Eagles a 21-17 lead, but the Spartans rallied back. A kill from Aurora's Emilee Mitchell cut the lead to 21-20, but the Spartans never regained a tie or a lead again.
Palmer and Wedvick led all players with 13 kills each. Palmer added in a team-high 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Wedvick hit .400 for the match and chipped in two blocks. Martin also reached double figures with 10 kills and just one attack error. Swansby dished out 43 assists and had a team-high three blocks.
Aurora was led by Mitchell who had 10 kills and hit .316 on the day. Libero Jessica Barney totaled 20 a match-high 20 digs, as the Spartans hit .150 for the match.
Edgewood College's next match with be a Senior Night date with Lakeland College. The Eagles and Muskies will toss the first serve at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday night at the Edgedome.
