WAUKESHA, Wis. – Coming off of a tough road loss, the Edgewood College volleyball teams snuck away with a thrilling five set road victory on Friday night. The Eagles split the first four sets with Carroll University, but won the all-important fifth set 15-10 to take the victory.
It appeared as though the Eagles (9-7) were going to take control of the match in the first set, hitting a blistering .536, en route to the 25-16 victory. Edgewood College pounded out 18 kills against only three errors in the set to set the tone for the match.
However, Carroll (7-10) bounced back, taking the second set 25-20 before the Eagles regained their lead with a 25-21 second set victory. In the third set, the Eagles had an opportunity to end the match, but the Pioneers edged out a narrow 25-23 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
Both teams hit well in the final set with Edgewood College only making three errors and Carroll making two errors. Each team recorded kills in the set, but the Eagles escaped with the 15-10 win to take the match 3-2.
Mallory Palmer led the Eagles with 27 kills, which marks her second highest career total. Last season she tallied 31 kills against the University of Dubuque.
Lindsey Swansby dished out a season-high 56 assists in the win while
Sam Himmelspach registered a team and match-high 26 digs.
Jessica Martin was the only other Eagle to reach double figures in kills with 14 while
Kaylin Wayne chipped in with nine and
Kristin Manske registered eight kills. As a team, Edgewood College posted a season best attack percentage of .274 in a five set match.
Edgewood College returns to Northern Athletics Conference play with a pair of home matches next week. The Eagles host Marian University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night and Dominican University at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. Edgewood College will provide both live stats and live video for both contests.
