Palmer leads Eagles to sweep of MSOE

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team earned their second sweep of the season and moved to 2-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play on Thursday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Eagles did not trail MSOE after the first set, taking the 3-0 sweep over the Raiders.

After an Eagle service error in the first set, the Raiders (3-6, 0-1 NAC) ran off four straight points with Julie Windish at the service line. MSOE gained a 10-8 lead, forcing Edgewood College head coach Paul Schlomer to call timeout.

Jessica Martin tied the score out of the timeout with back-to-back kills. The teams then traded points until the Raiders held a 14-13 advantage. Mallory Palmer and Brittany Bylsma recorded consecutive kills to give the lead back to the Eagles. Edgewood College (5-6, 2-0 NAC) did not trail from that point on in the match.

Palmer put the Eagles up 20-16 with consecutive kills and Martin gave the Eagles a chance at set point with another kill. After a kill by Julie Windish, the Eagles took the first set 25-21 on a Raider service error.

In the second set, the Eagles jumped ahead early and Kristin Manske gave the Eagles a commanding 15-9 lead with an ace. Manske then ended the 25-18 set victory with one of her five kills in the match, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Kaylin Wayne gave the Eagles a 16-11 lead in the third set with one of her three kills in the match. Lindsey Swansby followed with an ace to put the Eagles up by six points. The lead swelled to 21-14 before MSOE called timeout with Laura Sweeney serving. Manske and Palmer registered back-to-back kills before a Raider attack error gave the Eagles the 25-14 win to sweep the match.

Palmer was the only Eagle to reach double figures in kills with 12 to go along with 12 digs for a double-double. Martin followed Palmer with nine kills while Sweeney tallied a team-high 16 digs. Swansby led the team with 34 assists in the match.

The Eagles will be on the road this weekend when the play at the Lawrence University Quadrangular on Saturday. Edgewood College will face host Lawrence at 11:00 a.m. before playing Alverno College at 2:00 p.m. and Cardinal Stritch University at 4:00 p.m.
