Palmer, Martin lead Eagles past Blue Angels

MADISON, Wis. – Playing their final home regular season match, the Edgewood College volleyball team faced nonconference foe Mount Mary College. The Blue Angels stayed with the Eagles, but Edgewood College took the sweep, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 to earn their 18th win of the year.

Edgewood College(18-11) quickly jumped ahead of the Blue Angels behind a pair of Mallory Palmer kills and Sarah Schuchhardt forced a Mount Mary timeout with a kill that put the Eagles up 12-4 in the first set. Out of the timeout, Mount Mary (17-15) went on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to just two points. After a tie at 16, Palmer tallied a pair of kills around a Blue Angel attack error to give the Eagles the lead for good. Kristen Manske ended the set with one of her two kills in the match. Palmer led the Eagles with six kills in the first set.

Palmer was all the offense Edgewood College needed in the second set, recording 11 of the Eagles' 16 kills in the set. The Eagles held a slim 10-9 lead before they went on an 8-0 spurt to separate themselves from the Blue Angels. Palmer had three kills on the run while Katie Wedvick chipped in with one and Jessica Martin recorded an ace. Martin then ended the 25-15 set win with one of her 10 kills in the match.

The Eagles held a slim 7-6 lead in the third set before going on an 8-3 run. Martin, Brittany Bylsma and Aryn Wellnitz all recorded kills on the run and Martin served up another ace. Mount Mary came back and cut the Eagle lead to just 20-18 before Dacy Swansby and Jennifer Lenz posted consecutive kills. After back-to-back kills by Martin and Wellnitz, the Eagles took the set 25-19 to sweep the match.

Palmer led the Eagles with 17 kills to go along with eight digs. In the match, Palmer went over 400 kills for the season marking the third time in her career she has accomplished that feat. Martin recorded 11 digs to go along with her 10 kills, earning her third double-double of the season and fifth of her career. Lindsey Swansby handed out 34 assists, which put her over the 1,000 assist mark for the second consecutive season. Sam Himmelspach tied Martin for the team lead with 11 digs.

Edgewood College wraps up their regular season schedule on Saturday when they travel to the Benedictine University Invitational. The tournament will take place at North Central College due to water damage to Benedictine's floor. The Eagles will face 17th ranked Elmhurst College at 12:00 p.m. before playing North Central at 2:00 p.m.
