Eagles extend winning streak to six matches

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team ran their winning streak to six matches after sweeping the Alverno College Triangular. The Eagles finished their Northern Athletics Conference schedule with a 3-0 win over Alverno College before topping North Park University 3-1 in comeback fashion.

Rachel Thomsen started the match at the service line for the Eagles, and promptly served six straight points. Lindsey Swansby and Jessica Martin recorded back-to-back kills in the middle of the 6-0 run. After Mallory Palmer put the Eagles up 20-10, Alverno (3-23, 0-10 NAC) went on a quick 4-0 spurt. Edgewood College's lead was cut to 22-18 before Aryn Wellnitz recorded a kill. Kristin Manske and Martin then recorded consecutive kills to give the Eagles the 25-18 set victory.

With the second set tied at seven the Eagles (17-9, 9-3 NAC) again went on a 6-0 run, started by a pair Martin kills. Manske followed with a kill and Thomsen recorded a pair of service aces to cap the run and give the Eagles a 13-7 lead. The Inferno came back and cut the deficit to 14-12, but the Eagles held off the rally and went on to take the set 25-20.

Alverno open up a 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Eagles chipped away at the deficit, and with Edgewood College trailing 10-8, Manske sparked the Eagle offense with another kill. From that point on, the Eagles outscored the Inferno 17-2, including an 8-0 run followed by a 7-0 spurt before Martin gave the Eagles the 25-12 win to take the sweep.

Manske posted her first double-double of the season and third of her career with 10 kills and 12 digs. Palmer also recorded 10 kills and Martin chipped in with nine. Swansby posted 30 assists while Thomsen led the team with 13 digs.

In the second match, North Park (11-15) came out firing the first set. The Vikings used a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead in the first set. They extended the lead and earned the 25-18 first set victory while hitting .312 in the set.

Leading 10-8 in the second set, Swansby started a quick 4-0 Eagle spurt with one of her four kills in the match. Manske followed with a kill before Palmer hammered home consecutive kills to give the Eagles a 14-8 lead. The Vikings came back and tied the set at 18, and the teams then traded points before Swansby sparked another spurt with a kill. Sarah Schuchhardt followed with a kill and after a Viking error, Palmer gave the Eagles the 25-21 set win to even the match at one.

Edgewood College opened the third set on a 5-1 run to force a North Park timeout. Palmer sparked a 7-0 run and Martin ended the spurt that gave the Eagles a commanding 15-5 lead. The Vikings came back and cut the deficit to 22-18, but Palmer started a 4-0 run with another kill. Schuchhardt ended the 25-18 third set win with consecutive kills.

The fourth set started with five straight Eagle points behind the serving of Manske. Palmer and Schuchhardt scored all five points for the Eagles on the run. Edgewood College closed the set on a 12-2 run to take the set 25-8 and the match 3-1.

Palmer posted her 15th double-double of the season, leading the Eagles with 20 kills to go along with 13 digs. Schuchhardt recorded a career-high 12 kills while Laura Sweeney led a group of six Eagles that reached double figures in digs with 17. Swansby handed out 41 assists, and Thomsen dished out 12 more helpers in the victory.
