Wellnitz leads Eagles to win on Senior Night

MADISON, Wis. – On a night where the Edgewood College volleyball team's seniors were honored, the trio of Aryn Wellnitz, Kristin Manske and Dacy Swansby led the Eagles to a sweep of Concordia University Wisconsin, 25-16, 25-12, 25-13. Wellnitz led the Eagles with 13 kills, moving the Eagles to 8-3 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

Trailing 10-9 in the first set, the Eagles (15-9, 8-3 NAC) used a 9-3 run to take control. Seniors Manske and Wellnitz recorded two kills apiece while on the run and Manske capped the spurt with one of her two aces in the match. Sarah Schuchhardt gave the Eagles the 25-16 first set victory with one of her two kills in the match. Mallory Palmer posted six of her nine kills in the first set while Wellnitz recorded four kills in the set.

With the second set tied at seven, Kaylin Wayne sparked a 7-0 run for the Eagles. Wellnitz accounted for two kills before Wayne pounded home another kill and Laura Sweeney ended the run with an ace. The Eagles continued to extend the lead and took the set 25-12 on a Palmer kill. Wellnitz led the Eagles with four kills in the second set.

Concordia Wisconsin (3-18, 2-7 NAC) quickly took a 3-0 lead in the third set and held an 8-6 lead before Wayne gave the Eagles a side out that brought Rachel Thomsen to the service line. Thomsen served 11 straight points to put the Eagles up 17-8. Wellnitz recorded three kills on the run. After Brittany Bylsma posted back-to-back kills to give the Eagles match point, Wellnitz pounded home her 13th kill of the match, and fifth of the set, to give the Eagles the 25-13 victory.

The Eagles' three seniors accounted for more than half of Edgewood College's 40 kills. Wellnitz had 13, Manske accounted for seven and Dacy Swansby posted one kill. Along with her 13 kills, Wellnitz also led the Eagles with a .440 hitting percentage. Palmer registered nine kills while Sweeney recorded a match high 21 digs and Lindsey Swasnby handed out 32 assists.

Edgewood College will be in action again on Friday night when they travel to the Alverno College Triangular. The Eagles will play Alverno College at 5:00 p.m. and North Park University at 7:00 p.m. Edgewood College will be at home again on Saturday when they host Clarke University at 2:00 p.m.
