BALTIMORE, Md. – The Edgewood College volleyball team traveled to Maryland in hopes to end their three game losing streak dating back to last season. The Eagles were able to do that as they won their first match 3-2 against Goucher College.
After falling behind the Gophers 2-1, the Eagles (1-2) responded with a couple impressive sets as they put Goucher away by the scores of 25-14 and 15-9. Freshman Mallory Palmer continued to impress as she once again led the team in kills with 11. Kristin Manske and Abbi Schultz added nine kills apiece while Ellie Peckham tallied 18 assists in the victory.
The Eagles would fall behind again against DeSales University (1-1), this time 2-0 by identical scores of 25-22. Just like before the Eagles would come back to tie the score at 2-2 with 25-20 wins in the third and forth sets. However they were not able to complete the comeback as the Bulldogs were able to hold on with a close 15-13 final set victory. Schultz led the way with 17 kills and sophomore transfer, Sara Schneider recorded a season high 36 assists for the Eagles.
Edgewood College (1-4) would drop the final match 3-1, to tournament host Johns Hopkins University (3-0). Palmer again reached double digits in kills with 10 to lead the team. Palmer has reached that mark every game this season for the Eagles. Freshman Carmen Terriquez was solid on defense as she recorded double digit digs for the fourth time this season.
Kim Lueck and Palmer were both named to the All-Tournament team. For the tournament Lueck tallied 38 digs while Palmer led the offense with 34 kills.
The Eagles will play their first home game of the young season on Wednesday when they host UW-Platteville. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
