Spartans sneak past Eagles

AURORA, Ill. – Only 14 hours after the Edgewood College volleyball team finished their match against Benedictine University, they faced off with Aurora University. The match saw the Eagles take the first two sets but ultimately fall in the fifth set by the score of 18-16.

The match could not have started any better for the Eagles (11-13, 4-3 NAC) as they took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-15, respectively. The Spartans (13-12, 6-1 NAC) got their offense going in the third set as they hit .282 and pounded out 14 kills in the 25-11 victory. It was more of the same in the fourth set as Aurora won the set 25-13.

In the fifth set, the Eagles did not give up as they played the Spartans tough but could not breakthrough as Aurora took the set 18-16. For the set, both teams had identical hitting percentages of .184 with the Spartans tallying 11 kills to the Eagles 10.

The Eagle offensive leaders were Mallory Palmer, who recorded a match high 16 kills and Ellie Peckham who tallied 18 assists. Defensively the Eagles had five players that recorded double digits in digs, Laura Sweeney had 10, Peckham added 12, Palmer pitched in 13, Carmen Terriquez tallied 20, and Kim Lueck led the team with 24. With 35 digs over the weekend, Lueck is one dig away from reaching 1,000 in her career.

The Eagles will next be in action when the travel to Rockford College on Wednesday night to face the Regents. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
