MADISON, Wis. - After a break-through win last night against Benedictine, the Edgewood College volleyball team wanted nothing more than to add a second conference win to their tally. Unfortunately, Aurora University's Jill Smart and Tonya Wilhoit had other plans. The two Spartans combined for 38 kills and just five errors as Aurora downed Edgewood College 25-18, 25-10, 24-26 and 25-10 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The Spartans (4-15, 3-3 NAC) jumped on the Eagles early in the first two sets, rolling out to 8-1 and 11-2 leads respectively. The Spartans recorded 15 kills in each of those two sets and just seven total errors.
Edgewood College (5-16, 1-5 NAC) responded with a gutsy comeback in set three, overcoming a slow start to take an 11-9 lead. The two teams traded nearly every point the rest of the match, but the Eagles never surrendered the advantage. Finally, after a 24-24 tie, the Eagles got back-to-back kills from Kim Paskey and Aryn Wellnitz to take the set.
The final set belonged to the Spartans as Smart served five straight points for a 21-8 lead.
Edgewood College was led by Paskey and Kristin Manske who had nine kills apiece. Manske also had a team-high 16 digs, while setter Hannah Williams dished out 28 assists. Smart had 24 kills for Aurora, while Wilhoit had 14. Spartan setter Cortni Ramm had 42 assists.
Edgewood College will hit the road for their next three matches beginning with a trip to Milwaukee and a date with MSOE on Tuesday night.
