Softball splits with Marian College

Jenna Ryan

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (April 14, 2007) – Edgewood College managed a split with Marian College after falling to the Sabres 2-0 in game one. The Eagles then rallied with a 3-2 victory in game two to hand Marian its first loss in Northern Athletics Conference play.

Sabres freshman pitcher Kristin Rose hurled a complete-game shutout in game one, allowing just four hits and striking out seven Eagle batters. Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis.) and Carrie Flaherty (Pomona, Colo.) scattered back-to-back, one-out singles in the top of the seventh inning, but the Eagles couldn’t plate a run. Leslie Bell (Monona, Wis.) went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the team offensively.

Marian jumped out to an early lead in game two as Edgewood College starting pitcher allowed two runs in the first inning. Ryan allowed just one more hit the rest of the way, however, en route to the complete game victory. Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when her two-out single brought in a pair of runs. An unearned run in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game, as the Sabres out-hit Edgewood College 3-2.

With the split, the Eagles remain at .500 both overall and in conference action at 11-11 (5-5 NAC). Meanwhile the Sabres still sit in third place with an 11-1 record in the NAC (19-7 overall).
