Dr. James Goll

Alma Mater:
B.S., Chemistry and Mathematics, Carroll University
Ph.D., Inorganic Chemistry, Iowa State University of Science and Technology

Dr. Goll joined the faculty of Edgewood College in 2001.  He is a Wisconsin native, originally from Sheboygan Falls.  After a seventeen year exile, he returned to Wisconsin and now resides in Verona.  Once again, Dr. Goll can enjoy the food of his people.

Dr. Goll received his B.S. degree from Carroll University majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics and minoring in Physics.  He then obtained his Ph.D. from Iowa State University of Science and Technology in Inorganic Chemistry under the direction of Dr. L. Keith Woo.  After completing his doctorate, Dr. Goll spent two years as a postdoctoral scientist first at North Carolina State University and then at the University of North Carolina with Dr. H. Holden Thorp. Dr. Goll continued his postdoctoral career for two additional years at the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Dr. Michael J. Therien.  He spent a year at Mercer University in Georgia as a visiting professor and five years at Glenville State College in West Virginia as a professor before coming to Edgewood College.

Dr. Goll resides in Verona with his wife Judy.

Service Interests
Dr. Goll serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative in the Athletic Department.  He is a liaison between the faculty and the Athletic Department and serves as the NCAA official to insure academic integrity.  Dr. Goll served as chair the Faculty Athletics Representatives committee of the Northern Athletics Conference in 2008 and 2009.  As Faculty Athletics Representative, he speaks to student-athletes about faculty expectations.  He serves as scorekeeper for volleyball, and statistician for women’s and men’s basketball.  Dr. Goll is often in attendance at other Edgewood College teams’ games and matches.

Dr. Goll advocates that participation in extracurricular activities result in a more engaged student.  A more engaged student will have a more fulfilling educational experience.  Dr. Goll is the faculty advisor to Achievement in Medicine, the student organization for pre-health professional students. He is also involved in K-16 activities at the Edgewood schools and regularly performs demonstration shows during National Chemistry week.

Teaching Interests
Dr. Goll is an Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics. During his tenure at Edgewood College, he has taught General, Introductory, Analytical, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry courses, Chemistry Seminar, Green and Sustainable Chemistry, and Ethics and Responsibility in Scientific Research. Dr. Goll's educational interests include using TV and movies in the classroom. He was invited to author a chapter for the book Hollywood Chemistry. The chapter is entitled, “Using Space Program from Mercury to Apollo as Portrayed in the Movies The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 and the Miniseries From the Earth to the Moon as a Teaching Tool.”

Dr. Goll published a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education entitled “Teaching Chemistry Using October Sky” and another in The Chemical Educator entitled “The Girls with Yellow Hands.” The latter paper was coauthored by Jenifer Ley, a former member of the Edgewood College softball team, and Tarah Nytes, a former member of the Edgewood College basketball team. He also published a paper entitled “Teaching Science Using the Movie Apollo 13” in ScienceScope. Dr. Goll and Stacie Mundringer, a former member of the Edgewood College golf team, coauthored a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education entitled “Teaching Chemistry Using From the Earth to the Moon.” This was the cover story for the March 2003 issue. Previously, Dr. Goll published a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education, entitled “Teaching Chemistry Using the Movie Apollo 13.” Dr. Goll was also interviewed by Chemistry and Engineering News about his use of movies to teach chemistry. His expertise in this area was affirmed when Dr. Goll was interviewed for an article in the American Chemical Society publication, Chemistry, entitled “Chemistry on Television.”

Dr. Goll is also known for his work on incorporation of Green Chemistry in the curriculum. Dr. Goll has made presentations with former Edgewood soccer players, Jerrid Dokey and Tyler Duellman, former track and cross country team member, Dan Oryall, and former baseball team member, Andrew Handorf. Dr. Goll and his students have presented at Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, American Chemical Society, and the Council on Undergraduate Research. Dr. Goll also serves as a reader for the Advanced Placement Chemistry Examination.

Research Interests
In addition to his interests in using popular media to teach chemistry, Dr. Goll also has research interests in the areas of porphyrins, metalloporphyrin, high-valent metal complexes, and fluorinated compounds.  The metalloporphyrin compounds are used to study equilibrium, kinetics, and mechanisms of atom transfer mediated electron transfer.  Students involved in chemistry research are involved in these projects.  These research interests also find their way into coursework and laboratories.
