"Eddy" is the name of the beloved Edgewood College mascot. But just where was Eddy hatched?
The origin of the Eagle nickname dates back to the early 1970's when Edgewood College was turning coed. At this time the College began an intercollegiate basketball team and its first coach, John Engelbrecht, along with students Jim Wilson and Lyman "Woody" Woodman, were discussing possible mascots for the team.
Their conversations centered around mascots that would not be offensive and yet represent the school and team. They thought that an Eagle, which is a beautiful bird and soars high, would best represent the school and team. Thus, the name Edgewood College Eagles was born.
For Edgewood, a Catholic College in the Sinsinawa Dominican tradition, the Eagle is particularly significant.
According to Sr. Maggie Hopkins, Director for the Office of Dominican Mission at Edgewood College, in Christian tradition and art, the symbol for the writer of the Gospel of John, is the eagle - reminding the reader of the high point of reflection that the writer reached.
For the Sinsinawa Dominicans, founders of Edgewood College, the most accepted meaning of their name "Sinsinawa", comes from the Menominee Indians, meaning "Home of the Young Eagle." Today, it is not uncommon to see eagles flying over the Sinsinawa Mound area located in southwestern Wisconsin.

Edgewood College Dance Team
Purpose
The purpose of the Edgewood College dance team is to promote school spirit. The team performs at various events during the fall homecoming period, including soccer and volleyball games, as well as all home men's a women's basketball games.
When and Where to see us! The team performs at all Men’s and Women’s basketball games during the school year. The team also competes at dance competitions. Look for us at the Wisconsin Spirit Classic Dance Competition on Nov. 15th, 2008 in Milwaukee. Wish the team good luck when you see them!
Practices
The team practices four times a week on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 8-10 p.m. and Sunday’s from 5-7:30 p.m. We focus on learning technique and new routines to perform at games and dance competitions. Attendance is expected at all practices and performances, except where extraneous circumstances apply.
Expenses
The majority of expenses encountered will be covered by funds present in the dance team account. Currently, the dance team is listed as a student organization, and receives minimal funding. However, should superfluous expenses arise, there are various fundraising opportunities we will capitalize on, as a team.
Tryouts
Tryouts will be in the early few weeks of the school year. Announcements will be made, an email will be sent out, and fliers will be posted to notify you of the upcoming tryout dates. Everyone is required to tryout each year, regardless of prior experience. Tryout week is mandatory, to be a part of the team. Only in cases of emergency or other extreme interferences will alternatives be made to tryout week attendance. If you are having difficulty attending that week, please contact the coach. The final squad size will be determined after scores are tabulated. It will be approximately 8-14 members.
If you have other questions, please contact the dance team coach, Elizabeth Crone, at 608-628-3380 or by e-mail at ECrone@edgewood.edu.

Edgewood, we sing of you, a beacon bright and true
Always mindful of our past, our values we renew.
We work to build a better world, and here we get our start,
And we remember through the years, Heart speaks to heart!
Edgewood is of this land, our home by lake and mound,
Growing strong through scholarship, respect and truth profound.
While wishing peace for all the world, we learn to play our part,
And we remember through the years, Heart speaks to heart! Heart!
